IMPUNITY: NBA LAGOS MEMBERS TO EMBARK ON PROTEST MARCH TO NIGERIAN NAVY TODAY

Fiery Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Uchenna Ogunedo Akingbade will today lead members of the branch on a street march to protest "flagrant disregard of the judgment of the National Industrial Court" by the Nigerian Navy.

CITY LAWYER recalls that the branch leadership had issued a strongly worded statement condemning the alleged impunity by the leadership of the Nigerian Navy, warning that this posed an imminent danger to rule of law in Nigeria.

The branch condemned as "unlawful" the action of the Nigerian Navy in classifying its member, Vice Admiral Dada Olaniyi Labinjo (Rtd.), as a “deserter” notwithstanding the judgment, adding that the protest has "become necessary" to spotlight "the disregard for a subsisting Court judgment, and the grave danger this poses to our justice system and our nation."

According to the protest notice made available to CITY LAWYER, "In defence of the Rule of Law and in solidarity with our member, the Branch will embark on a Peaceful Protest March to the Western Naval Command to present our protest letter and demands."

The branch leadership urged members "to turn out in large numbers and lend their voices to this critical and noble cause," adding that "This peaceful protest is a stand for justice, accountability, the supremacy of our Courts, and the Rule of Law."

Below is the full text of the notice.
