NBA AND THE CIRCLE OF INSTITUTIONAL FAILURE WITHIN THE PROFESSION: HOW PERSONAL POLITICAL AMBITIONS KILL PROGRESS IN NBA
By Bayo Akinlade
"Bayo, if you are interested in contesting for an office in NBA you have to start consulting"
My Response: "What's the difference between consultation and campaigning?"
This current NBA leadership has barely spent a year in office before candidates for the next elections started their open campaigns.
It is so bad that campaigns for the next 3 circles of leadership has already began
Millions of Naira has been spent by these candidates, sponsoring NBA activities only for their personal gains ... which brings me to the thorny question of the sincerity of their campaign speeches and sweet words of transforming the profession.
Its all a distraction really!
Most of these candidates do not see beyond their personal goal to hold office. It's even more annoying when they think we, the electorate are fools and we don't know it's all a lie.
If anyone has anything to offer in this profession you need not hold office and you certainly do not need to spend millions travelling to all the States and most of the Branches to do this.
Many of these candidates have nothing to say when things go wrong.
They are mute when Government officials are openly accused of corruption. They are uninterested when the poor have no access to justice. They are clueless in promoting reform agendas and in monitoring the process of an effective justice system.
They would rather spend their resources and time amplifying their personal ambitions than doing what promotes our cause as lawyers.
What perplexes me most is how these individuals use the NBA structure to promote themselves. Why not support the current leadership to make NBA better and in the process make Nigeria better. Why not spend all that travel money and "donations" to the branches law week to promote lasting structures within the Branches.
NBA cannot grow or develop if we only have elections to look forward to. These people will just take office and we will go back to just partying and campaigning for the next bunch of individuals who do practically nothing but hold a title but don't do anything with it.
Those who are campaigning should wait for the time when the campaigns are allowed and let this current leaders do the work we voted them to do.
Stop distracting us. We are not buying the crap you are dishing out and we certainly do not appreciate making this profession worse by your antics.
Please reset and if you really have something to contribute, start doing it! Talk is cheap!
